Stephen’s Backpacks!
It is that time of year again to start going through your child's toys and books. The grade 1s will be hosting a TOY AND BOOK SALE to support Stephen's Backpack Society on November 24, 2016 for the entire day. Please send in any gently used toys and/or books starting on November 21. We will also accept cash donations. All of the money raised this year will be used to purchase backpacks filled with items like books, toothbrushes, and toys for children that live on the streets in Calgary. For more information about this program please go to the Stephen's Backpack Society at http://www.stephensbackpacks.com. This morning the student's were very helpful, kind and respectful for Mrs. Goodall while Mrs. McLarty was away. In the afternoon, we learned about a new artist - Ted Harrison. We noticed that his art is similar to Morriseau's in a few ways. His paintings have bright colors with pictures of the land and animals from the north. We also discussed the difference between the concepts same and similar.
In math we played a dice game to practice adding / subtracting on the 100 chart. We practiced moving up and down to add or subtract 10 and moving left and right to add numbers between 1 - 9. We also continued getting faster at our mental math skills of: 1) subtilizing dice, 2) using doubles, 3) adding onto the greater number and 4) breaking up a number into 10s and 1s. This year’s Winter Concert will be held on November 30 at two different evening times. Please see the below schedule and continue to check the weekly newsletters to find out more information. Show 1- 5:30pm Parents arrive at 5:15pm Performers: AM Kinders, MacArthur, McNabb, Keir, Stuart/Tipper, McLarty Show 2 - 7:00pm Parents arrive at 6:45pm Performers: PM Kinders, Predika, Caravan, Byciuk, Watkins, Stanford, Yacyshyn This morning Mrs. Ahn taught us about another Habit of Mind - Self Control. We learned about having patience and waiting our turn. We played two games to practice being patient.
Today we also had literacy switches where we continued to work on mastering new words in Word Work and practicing our writing stamina while doing Work on Writing. In guided reading, we are applying our strategies while reading books at our level and expanding our vocabulary through reading and discussion. In Science we talked about why papers absorb water differently. We noticed that paper towel, tissue paper, writing paper and wax paper are made up of different materials - especially the wax paper. In math, we played a place value game called First to 50 and back to 0. The game helped us practice adding and subtracting using tens and ones blocks. At the end of the day, we had in-class gym where we did Go Noodle - Fresh Start Fitness and Cosmic Yoga. Thank you to everyone for returning the Arts Commons forms. We are getting very excited! Today we did another science experiment to learn more about water. We learned a new word: Absorbing. We made predictions and tested different types of papers to see which one absorbed water the most and the least. We also reviewed the Water Cycle and noticed that at recess time there was precipitation in the form of snow since it was cold out. Then before lunch it started to get sunny so we were wondering whether the snow would melt and start evaporating or if it would absorb into the soil up on the field.
In the afternoon we shared different strategies to solve the Dog Sled problem from Monday. Afterwards we had gym where we started with warm up stations. Some of the stations are squats, mountain climbers, yoga poses and scissor jumps. Then we practiced our ball handling skills using basketballs. Reminders: 1) Return home reading books and Learning Commons books when done. They can be exchanged daily. 2) Students can still access RazKids. The login are still the same as last year. Email Mrs. McLarty if you need the information again. This afternoon, we listened to the story Akiak which is about a dog sled race in the arctic. We then worked through a challenging dog sled math problem. Many students used blocks and counters to solve it while others drew pictures.
Earlier in the day talked about the 'supermoon' that was special today. We also wrote in our journals about our favorite season or whether we wanted to travel to the moon or our own idea. It was so quiet and focused during writing! In gym this week we began basketball and remembered many of the ball tricks from last year. |
