Dear Parents,
Today in gym we practiced throwing and catching over the nets with teams. We had to throw the bean bag over the net. Whoever caught it had to then pass it to the other two team members and the last person tossed it back over to the other side. Once our team had 6 complete passes we put the bean bag away and grabbed the next object to try (tennis ball, stress rock, bouncy ball, etc). They got trickier the smaller the item got. We focused on moving to catch the balls. A lot of us are sticking our feet to the ground instead of moving to the ball. After Gym and Daily 5, Ms. Watkins showed us a "mystery bag"! We had 20 guesses to figure out what was inside. We asked questions like:
Is it alive?
Is it heavier than a book?
Is it green?
Is it something to eat?
Can you play with it?
After we asked our questions we were able to make guesses as to what was actually in the bag. It ended up being a ziploc full of Hershey Kisses! Yum! We then filled ziploc bags with unifex cubes that are about the same size as the kisses. We wanted to estimate how many kisses were in the bag. Afterwards we counted the kisses in a variety of ways. There were 82 kisses! We talked about the different strategies we could use to count them. As a class we counted by 2's, 5's, 10's and even 20's. We found it easiest to count by tens. We are going to use the Hershey Kisses to do a few more math tasks focused on estimation and number sense to 100.
After lunch we continued working on our "feely book".
Love,
The Grade Ones!
