Dear Parents,
This morning we started off by looking at an Artist Statement written by Wallace Edwards. We were looking for the criteria that he used to create a strong statement. Afterwards we wrote our own artist statements about the Norval Morrisseau inspired artwork we did last week. We then had Daily 5. This morning we all had two jobs to complete unless we were reading with a teacher. Our first job was to find words on a Boggle Board. We had to write the words that we found in our literacy journals. Writing the words down keeps us accountable for our time and shows our teachers that we are working appropriately. Our second job was to write about the books we are reading in guided reading. We could write about the characters, the setting, facts (for non-fiction), the story, etc.
In math we worked on counting by tens from various starting points. We rolled a dice and then had to count on from the number we rolled. For example: if we rolled a six, we wrote the next numbers in our math journals. (6, 16, 26, 36, 46, etc. all the way to 100) Some of us used the hundreds charts to help us.
This afternoon we did our Wednesday Yoga and then had a Science experiment. We had to find out how many drops of water could fit on a penny (or counter). We had to make predictions first and then perform the experiment three times. We were asked to observe the shape. Did that have anything to do with how much water could fit?!?! Ask me how many drops fit on my penny.
We finished off the day with some typing skills. We worked on finding the f and j keys. We then practiced typing them without looking (using the bumps on the keys). A great website to go on is Dance Mat Typing - try it out at home.
We are a sickly crew lately. We were down 8 kids today. We have been talking about washing our hands frequently and putting kleenex in the garbage.... shudder.... We also talked about coughing into your arm instead of on your neighbors. We would really appreciate that sick kiddos stay home to get better and that our wonderful parents could reinforce healthy habits at home (using soap! ha)
Here's to a tough cold/flu season! Take care!
Love,
The Grade Twos
