Dear Parents,
This morning our schedule changed because of rehearsals for "The Big Chill". Tomorrow all of the grade twos will have an hour long rehearsal to practice our songs. In gym we learned how to throw a chest pass in basketball. Ask me to show you how to do a proper chest pass. How should my hands be at the end?
For Mathematician Monday we answered the following question:
Using the Doubles Plus One strategy, answer the following questions:
1. 4+5
2. 9+10
3. 2+3
Ask me how I solved them using this strategy.
After recess we played a new math game called, "Spin and Cover". One person spins the wheel and gets the number (for example, 17), the other players look for equations that add or subtract to that number (9+8, 19-2). The object of the game is to cover your whole board. We noticed that a lot of us are having a difficult time adding and subtracting to 20. This might be something that we can practice at home!
After lunch we followed a step-by-step drawing of a cartoon Harry Potter. We did awesome! Following along step-by-step teaches us to slow down and look for the basic shapes in each picture.
We ended the day with an Absorbency Experiment. The question we wanted to answer was: If there was a big water spill, what material would you use to clean it up? We tested out seven different materials: cotton balls, paper towel, wax paper, Kleenex, diapers, writing paper and coffee filters. Ask me which material absorbed the most liquid.
A note from the Grade Ones:
Stephen’s Backpacks!
It is that time of year again to start going through your child's toys and books. The grade 1s will be hosting a TOY AND BOOK SALE to support Stephen's Backpack Society on November 24, 2016 for the entire day. Please send in any gently used toys and/or books starting on November 21. We will also accept cash donations. All of the money raised this year will be used to purchase backpacks filled with items like books, toothbrushes, and toys for children that live on the streets in Calgary. For more information about this program please go to the Stephen's Backpack Society at http://www.stephensbackpacks.com.
Have a great night!
Love,
The Grade Twos
