Thank you soo much for the quick responses about Zoo Volunteers. We are officially staffed! Thank you!
Dear Parents,
Today was our last day with the Chicks! We will miss them. They are going to be living with Mrs. Tipper! She is building a coop for them. We bet she will keep us updated on them. In music we played "musical statue". When the music stopped you had to freeze! We wrote our weekly letters to you! Please remember to write back to me. For art we had to draw the mirror image of an owl. We are learning about symmetry. It was T-R-I-C-K-Y! We are noticing that a lot of us are not reading their "Home Reading" books. It is very important to read everyday! Each morning Mrs. Stanford and Ms. Watkins will be asking the kiddos what their books were about. Our hope is that they will be able to discuss them and give a summary. Please help us with this by asking comprehension questions. For example: Who are the characters? What was the problem? How was the problem solved? What did you learn? Have a fantastic weekend! Love, The Grade Ones Dear Parents,
This morning in gym we continued on with the four "hockey-ish" games. Ask me what stations I played at today and what my favourite game was! We worked hard during Daily 5. Ask me what jobs I did today. Some of us even started research projects! After lunch we caught up on a TON of work! We had 5 jobs that we had to finish up. It always feels great to complete work and put it in the right place! We finished poetry, math, animal observations, art and journals! Phewf! We also read a couple more chapters of "Owls in the Family". So far, two boys and their teacher (from Saskatchewan!) have come across a baby owl, which they named Wol. They intend to take it home as a pet! (Can you imagine?!?!). We came across 2 interesting words today, ask me what they mean.
Field Trip forms were sent home today. Our Zoo field trip is coming up on May 16th. If you are able to join us as a volunteer, please let us know as soon as possible. It's the ZOO! Fun times!! :) Have a great night, Love, The Grade Ones Dear Parents, Today was a very special day! We had a visit from Clay for Kids! We followed the instructor step-by-step to create beautiful masterpieces. They are a secret though.... ** very hush hush**. Mrs. Stanford's group had gym today with the Grade threes. We played four different 'hockey-ish' type games. There was Ringette, Spaghetti and Meatballs (ask me what that game is), mini-hockey and regular hockey with a twist (the nets were backwards!)
From our duck and chick visit yesterday, we sketched both animals and compared their characteristics. Have a great day! Love, The Grade Ones Dear Parents, In math we learned a rap song about doubles. We practiced doubles 1-5 and then went on to learn the rap about doubles 6 - 10. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ik_-OAgzD-8 This afternoon we got to visit with the grade three's ducklings! They aren't so small anymore. They are huge! We were on the look-out for similarities and differences between the ducks and chicks. Some of the things we noticed about the ducks:
One of our peers brought in quiet critters to use during independent work times. We love little critters! Ask me what a quiet critter is!
Have a great day! Another callout for any available volunteers tomorrow. If you are free and would like to help us out, please let us know! Thanks. Love, The Grade Ones Hello Parents!
Happy Monday! We have a somewhat urgent request. We are in need of volunteers to join us on Wednesday for Clay for Kids! It is a really fun experience and we would be so appreciative if we could get some helpers. Ms. Watkins' group will be having their session Wednesday morning. Mrs. Stanford's group has their session Wednesday afternoon. The sessions take place at the school (bonus: no bus rides!!!!) If you are able to help out, please let us know! Thanks again! Sorry for the late notice. Dear Parents,
Today we had a big conversation about the characteristics of Fairytales and Folktales. We figured out that Fairytales use magic to create or solve problems, while Folktale character's are required to solve their problems using their brains. For example, Cinderella is a Fairytale because her problems are solved with the use of magic from her Fairy Godmother. The Three Little Pigs however is a Folktale, they must use their brains to choose the right materials to build their houses. Ask me for some other characteristics of Fairytales! Do you have a favourite Fairytale/Folktale? We also started learning about Owls. Did you know that the largest owl is the Great Horned Owl and the smallest owl in North America is the Elf Owl. Adult Elf Owls are only 6 inches tall when they are full grown! We learned about Owl pellets and how scientists can use the pellets to learn about the eating habits of an owl! Cool, and a little gross. But mostly cool! Reminder that Student-Led conferences are tomorrow evening (Thursday) and Friday during the day. As these are student-led, please make sure to bring your kiddo with you. They will be acting as your tour guide and have lots to show you! Have a great evening! Love, The Grade Ones Dear Parents, Today we pulled out our overgrown lettuce. It was starting to look like a tree and had flowers on top! The flowers were yellow. The roots of the lettuce were really long and skinny. We needed to pull it to make sure that the sweet peas that share the planters get the right nutrients. Introducing our Chicks!!!! We weren't able to update our blog yesterday due to technical difficulties. These little fellas are 4 days old today! There are six of them. There are 3 golden coloured ones, 2 black and 1 brown. We have them for two weeks! They are growing so quickly! We used our Chicks to solve a math problem today. We skip counted to see how many toes there are in all! We continued playing Ringette in gym today! We practiced passing to a friend and then had target practice. In Music we learned a Chicken song (not THAT chicken song :) and made up actions to go with it. This afternoon we went outside in the glorious sun to sketch our Spring Trees - we sketched the same trees in the Fall and Winter as well. Ask me what the changes were!
Reminder that there are Student-Led conferences on Thursday evening and Friday morning. Please sign up for a time using your CBE My Account. Have a fantastic evening in the heat!! Love, The Grade Ones Dear Parents, Today we learned about an instrument. It is from the Brass family. Can you guess what it is?? Did you take a guess???
It's a Euphonium!! Ms. Barchuk is learning to play it and brought it in to show us. It sounds similar to a Tuba. Ask me how she plays it! We also learned about Vishu! Vishu is believed to signal the arrival of good luck and fortune for the coming year. In the morning, the first thing that happens is the young and old come blindfold in front of the vishukani and view this as the day's first sight! How cool is that!! We hope you have a great day! Happy Vishu! Love, The Grade Ones Dear Parents,
Today in gym we practiced stick handling. We had to keep the tennis ball on our stick. It's important to keep your hockey stick on the floor! Ask me why?! We also had some target practice. We used a bowling pin as the target and tried to knock the pin down. In math we came up with a Cinderella problem. The question was: If there were 17 girls in the Kingdom, how many feet were there in total? What if there were 23 girls? 43 girls? We talked about the different ways we could solve the problem. Ask me what I did to figure it out. We finished off the day by reading another version of Cinderella. This one was written by Barbara McClintock. There were many differences. The main difference was in the original version, Cinderella went to one Ball, in this version, there were two Balls! Enjoy your evening! Love, The Grade Ones |
AuthorWe are a Grade Two class who blogs about our day at the end of each school day. This gives our parents hints to start conversations about our day. We also put reminders here for parents. Archives
